Val Bennett - Take 5

Like Rock Steady reggae? Imagine the slow tempo groove mixed with some jazz fusion and you have this amazing little gem from Val Bennett. This cover of The Dave Brubeck Quartet's ironic take 5 is a totally different beast. This is one of the many songs that are acknowledged as timeless tracks by Rock Steady fans. Rock Steady itself dominated the charts from 1966-1968 with the likes of: Toots & The Maytals, Bob Marley, Keith & Tex, Desmond Dekker & The Aces pioneering a new sub-genre that capitalized on the success of the final slow jam groove at the end of parties. Before being superseded by reggae in later years, this short chapter in Jamaican music history ranks among the best at producing soulful jams that stand the test of time.
