Jam Of Tha Day: Friday 03rd June 2011

Goblin - Black Forest / Blind Concert

Dario Argento's contribution to horror cinema is what Michael Jackson contributed to soul & pop. In 1977 hot off of his critically acclaimed success with Deep Red (1975), Argento collaborated once again with progressive rock group Goblin-who helped produce the success of that movie with their incredible soundtrack. Essentially both director and group would break new ground with their work on the experimental, feminist masterpiece which was Suspiria. The soundtrack has been acknowledged as one of the scariest pieces of music ever produced from any artist ever! Yet when listening to the familiar ominously intense chaotic music which features in the film-a 12 minute funk work out was included in the soundtrack. Essentially this song has nothing in common with the sounds or atmosphere of the rest of the material and has clearly been included as filler! Yet i would argue that this has to be some of the funkiest stuff I've ever had the pleasure of listening to!

The first half of the track entitled: Black Forest mixes Hendrix inspired guitar soloing with a strange folksy rhythm before transforming into a funk work out which segues into the second half of the track entitled: Blind Concert which is Funkadelic, Isaac Hayes and off kilter atmospheric horror-lite sounds. Enough waffling time to judge if my love for this jam is warranted?
