Jam Of Tha Day: Friday 15th July 2011

Martina Topley-Bird: Phoenix

This blog entry is gonna sound like a newbie but that's because i am. After accidentally searching for Janie Price's Bird album on Amazon i came across the eye opening artwork for Martina's fourth album. I first thought she was a new artist. Based purely on my lack of knowledge on her career & her collaborations with Massive Attack & Tricky. The first time i came to her work was on Gorillaz second LP: Demon Days-where she featured on one of the best grooves on that album I'm Alone. After researching a little bit more into her work i stumbled this jam. Her voice is calculatingly beautiful & heartfelt that when she sings it's instantly grabs you. The delivery is relaxed & proves you don't need to scream your lungs out to produce great harmonies & a melody with primarily a singing voice. The instrumentation on this stripped down version is very minimalistic in it's execution. It's focuses more on the vocals to carry the song, rather than the electronic "Danger Mouse" version which personally destroys the intimate atmosphere & almost devastating frankness in her delivery. I personally believe her story in this version rather in the previous version (in my opinion). I'll post both so you can compare between the two.
